About University at Albany

The University at Albany, also known as SUNY Albany, UAlbany or State University of New York at Albany, it is a public university situated in Albany, the capital city of New York, and the county seat of Albany County, being the oldest surviving European settlement from the original Thirteen Colonies.

The University was founded on May 7, 1844, as the New York State Normal School, by the State Legislature. By 1905, UAlbany became the 1st pubic institution in New York that was authorized to grant bachelor’s degrees.

The new downtown Albany campus was established in 1909, covering an area of 4 and half acres, between Western and Washington Avenues. The State University of New York was created in 1948, and by 1962, UAlbany was officially designated a university center of SUNY, beginning to grant doctoral degrees.

Today, UAlbany presents an enrollment of over 18 000 students, offering more than 50 undergraduate majors and over 120 graduate degree programs, through 9 different schools and colleges.

The athletic teams from SUNY Albany are known as the Albany Great Danes, covering various sports areas, such as men’s hockey, swimming, basketball and baseball. After the NCAA restructuring, in 1972, the university competed in Division III athletics, until the ’95-’96 school year, after which the university moved to the Division II. Today, the Great Danes have 19 varsity sports teams (11 women and 8 men), competing in the NCAA Division I, all of the athletic programs being run by the University’s Department of Athletics and Recreation.
